Matthews Alive Festival Matthews Alive!
August 31 – September 3

The Matthews Alive Festival is an annual event for Labor Day and will have four music stages, amusement rides, food, artwork, pony rides and lots more. It’s been identified as the largest Labor Day festival in the southeast. The activities take place at the corner of John and Trade Streets. Details.

CarolinaFest
September 3

Jeff bridgesA celebration to honor American working families, CarolinFest will serve as a kick off to the DNC activities. This event is free and open to everyone from 10 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. Stage performances will begin at Noon, following the parade. You’ll find performances by national and regional talent as well as speakers on two difference stages, exhibits, arts and crafts and all sorts of other outdoor festival type things. Activities will take place on Tryon Street between Stonewall to Trade Streets. Details.

Jamorah
September3

Local musicians join together to perform original and popular works in an improve format. A variety of genres will be represented such as funk, rock and reggae. 10 p.m. at  at Smokey Joes Cafe, 510 Briar Creek Rd, Charlotte, NC. Free. Details.

ARTSjam
September 4

Americans for the Arts Action Fund, The Recording Academy, The United States Conference of Mayors and NAMM: National Association of Music Merchants presents a celebration of the arts and arts education. There is a reception and performance will feature Bernie and the all stars, as well as prominent actors, musicians and elected officials. The mysterious guests can include someone you really like. Guess, you just have to step out there and hope they’ll show. The concert benefits American for the Arts, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization. Cost is $50 for the reception and show or $25 for just the show. 9:30 – 10:30 p.m. (VIP reception), 11 p.m. – 1 a.m. (Performance.) Details.

One World Comedy Jam
September 4

One World Comedy JamTickets are pretty pricey for this comedy event, but if you can drop $85-$150 for a ticket while contributing to the Obama re-election campaign, you can enjoy this show. Comedians include D.L. Hughley, Tommy Davidson and Aries Spears. I personally would really want to see Tommy Davidson. I think he’s a hoot! Remember his dancing from the days of In Living Color? Belk Theater at Blumenthal at 9 p.m. Details.

UndocuNation
September 5

The week of the DNC is going to overflow with activities and events in Charlotte. I won’t pretend to cover them all, or even a fraction, but this one seems interesting if you’re into the arts. Clearly, I am. The gathering will feature and celebrate artists who played a pivotal role in the social movement of immigrant rights. Artists include singers, filmmakers, poets and more. UndocuNation is presented by the Center for New Community and CultureStrike.  All ages are welcome. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m. at the Neighborhood Theatre. Details.
